Education path for Cyber Security IT & Tech Careers. Not curious about Windows or MSSQL, nothing new there.Server OS: I've bounched back and forth with Cen. The landscape of operating systems and databases has changed a bit in the last few years. I've been wondering about others' preferences on a few things. First and foremost I want an offsite copy of the files. I was hoping to do an initial backup of each share locally for speed and then to transport it to another site where it would be reconnected and then running incremental backups most of the time At the moment the regular robocopy that I do between the NetApp/Huawei averages 5Gb each day (although can be as much as 15Gb) which they wouldn't even notice.įile organisation is coming - over 50% of the files on the network are over 10 years old - but this will take some time as staff will need to change the way they work. Some of the existing shares to be backed up are quite small - a couple of Gb but one in particular is over 2Tb - another issue is there is no archiving strategy, files are just stored on the NetApp/Huawei without a thought of organisation - again, this predates me by some years. Backups are data only - this is probably not ideal but we have a number of sites connected via MPLS and a DC at each so hopefully AD information would survive the loss of a single site - I am aware that there are other issues that could happen but there are only a limited number of users (<25) and reconnecting them to their data is main focus. My primary concern was/is an offsite copy of the files and having had some limited experience with Synology I was happy to go along with the suggestion from the team that manage the filers.

Files are stored on the NetApp (Which has files dating back 20 years) and the Huawei rather than on servers - nothing wrong with this providing backups are in place - but they are not. We have 100Mb leased lines between sites.
